SURVIVING HURRICANE MARIA

 

Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico. After the storm, the island’s healthcare system collapsed. While some clung to the few services available, others invented their own solutions to stay alive. In 2018, A year after the hurricane made landfall, many still felt the U.S. government had forgotten them.

A year after Maria made landfall, some homes still had temporary plastic tarps as roofs.

The emergency medical and rescue team in the municipality of Yabucoa, where the hurricane made landfall. The team decided to switch to analog radio systems because their digital platforms collapsed with the storm.

Adrián Torres, who suffers from a congenital disease, fell into a depression after the hurricane. The electric wheelchair he depends on to get around was out of commission after the storm.
